I have a leaky [new}temp probe, not even running yet! Anybody run into this? Tightening did not do anything.Right size o ring im thinking .Goop it up with pipe thread sealant.Any ideas? Thanks Don

I found what looks like a bushing embedded in the head, brass colored tried hooking the shoulder of it and its stuck in there.Never thought i would have this much trouble with a temp gauge install. Question is, should there be anything in that opening but the iron head itself? I did find the bushing that goes with the new temp probe. Im thinking that brass thats in the head now has to come out,but how?

This situation is not uncommon. Find a piece of rod that is approx The same size as the hole you have there. get it in an inch or so then push it to the side and the flange will break loose where it is stuck and the whole bulb should drop out.

Show crop what i see in there is about 1/4 to 3/8
wide almost looks like part of the head. Common
sense tells me no. I will try and rock it out with a
rod

Unless some PO has modified your head there is no bushing in it. The head has a seat for the temp sensing probe machined into it from the factory. You simply insert the probe and tighten down the nut behind it. You must get the nut very tight with a "flare nut" wrench. You will round off the corners of the nut if you tighten it with an open end wrench.

Got the old bushing out and new bushing is to large to fit back in hole. Old bushing fits temp probe but leaks. Don,t have flare nut wrench to tighten.Looks like i need to get one Thanks Tesas

Gunny,

I recall this problem with certain kits that defective. The problem with the kits was that they provided 1/2" ferrules, when 3/8" ferrules were required. This might be your problem as well.

As I recall, every factory installed temperature gauge had a ferrell between the head and the bulb. I don't believe I have seen a new temperature gauge kit with the correct ferrell.

When we installed my temp gauge on my 841, dad drilled out the hole a bit (seemed to be a bushing embedded in the hole) to make the new bushing that came with the unit fit. It leaked until the engine got hot then quit. I don't know if the brass heated and filled the hole, or if the engine was full of stop leak and that solved it. But either way I've ran it all summer with no problem.
