Head gasket, blow by or what?

4000, 3 cyl diesel, I was mowing today and suddenly got fuel blowing out of the rear of the exhaust manifold, above and behind the oil filter. Tractor didn't miss a beat or lose power, but I am pretty darn sure it isn't right!

Sounds like two problems. Having fuel in the exhaust could be caused by the injectors leaking or firing when they're not supposed to, but having it come out of the manifold near where it meets the head means that the manifold itself is leaking as well. It could be leaking from a crack in the manifold or from the gasket between the manifold and the head.

OK, what would cause it to suddenly start, I had been running the tractor for 30 minutes and why doesn't it cause the engine to slobber or miss or something? Your reply makes sense and sounds as if it is a much easier fix than what I presumed. I am just surprised the tractor continued to run without interruption, it was under a pretty good load.

Have you checked the fuel return line that is right above the rear cylinder? There is a little reservoir there to hold fuel for the intake heater.
