How to by-pass starter button?

My 850 was running for about 2.5 hrs, I was mowing fields at our hunt camp. I shut it off to clean debris out of the grill to keep the air flowing. Got back on hit the starter button the engine turned over 1 time but didn't start and then it wouldn't do anything at all, I even took the wires off the key and connected them together to rule out the key switch. Then I jumped the starter with another tractor, I could get the starter to turn over but tractor wouldn't start. I also pulled the solenoid off my running tractor and put it on the one that wouldn't start but it still would not crank when I jumped the starter.
I would either like to know how to trouble shoot or just replace the relay and use a key start and by-pass the push start button. Tractor is 6 hours away would like to know how I can do this with out wasting alot of time when I go back up to camp. Thanks

ince you can get starter to run with 'jump', then it is likely that your problem is in battery, battery terminal connections, cables, ground cable, etc. rather than switches, solenoid, etc.

I checked connections on battery both were tight. Just trying to cover most of the possibilities since tractor is 6 hours away and would like to take parts up there that I will possibly need.

if the starter spins when jumped from another battery, I agree with jmor.. look at your cables, grounds, bat, terminal ends.. etc.

you can check the solenoid with an ohm meter.

'm not telling you that such is absolutely what it is, but 'tight' isn't conclusive. An oxide can & does form between the terminal & post that is an excellent insulator & even wire brushing won't always remove it (scrape/file/etc.). Further, there is corrosion & rust to consider between cable end & chassis. Then add to that the often found corrosion between the copper of cable & the cable end. So many possibilities,............. even inside battery.

I wouldn't remove the safety push button start
on any tractor. I dang near got ran over once
at an auction with a 901.

The push button complete the ground circut for
the solenoid. If you take the wire off the
solenoid and touch it to ground. The starter
should crank.( it will also run over you if
it's in gear!)

I would start by making sure the battery is
good and clean the battery connections on the
battery and on the starter. using a test light
start with the starter and see if it has power.
if it doesn't then kept moving the light to the
next connection and test.

I had a battery die yesterday in a Dodge
truck. I started it twice. On the third time it
wouldn't start. The battery now only shows 10
volts. I'm guessing a cell in my battery died.

Thanks guys! I will certainly check the battery and the connections. That sounds pretty straight forward and easy enough.

Hi Gents, just got back from our hunt club and it turns out it was the battery after all! I took a new battery up put it in and also a new key switch because I messed up the one that was on there. I kept seeing it spark at the battery cabel each time I turned the key on, and it would turn over without even pushing the starter button. Well after about an hour of looking and removing and switching wires, thought maybe I reversed the key switch wires, I took a hammer and tapped on the solenoid, it was stuck, causing the starter to spin every time I hooked the battery up. After that ran fine started fine!
Have another story for another time about my other 850 and a pin hole in the oil line going to oil pressure gauge.
Thanks guys
