1963 Ford 4000 SOS PTO questions

So my 1963 Ford 4000 SOS is not working right. When I bought tractor cable did not have a handle. Cable was stuck in tube. When I unscrewed nut from tranny cover I could pull cable in and out of housing cover a little ways. I now have everything all freed up. Have done a lot of reading on this web sight and have a couple questions. Can the inner cable be unthreaded from tranny cover and be threaded back in without removing? Not that I want to do this but concerned I may have unthreaded it too much messing around. Not really quite sure how to set the cable pull length without messing with all the hydraulic pressure stuff.
 
The PTO cable can be adjusted without removing the top cover if the cable has not been damaged or completely unthreaded. You need not take pressure readings to adjust.

I will not attempt to provide instructions to do this in a chat forum, but it can be easily done with the proper manual.

Provided one didn't push the actuator (cable nut) down into the transmission when the cable was removed, then yes it can be. If the actuator was pushed out of place, the transmission cover has to be removed and the shifter cable stub used to hold it in place while the cover is replaced. If the cable has been completely unscrewed one must gently thread it back into the actuator without pushing the actuator down into the transmission.

With the PTO cable in the on position (pulled out) turn the handle counterclockwise until the lower end of the conduit is snug against the boss on the transmission cover. Continue to turn until the tab in the hood fits in the slot of the upper cable body. Tighten conduit nuts and hood retainer nut. If you have a lube light on your tractor (some do and some don't) and it works, it must remain off when the PTO is engaged. If it doesn't, try adjusting the cable again.
