Fuel crud question

Hi, All,

In the course of getting a 3/4 dead 841 running again, I rebuilt the carb - probably the 4th or 5th MS carb I have rebuilt. Its a big carb appropriate for the 172 engine, but the numbers have rubbed off the brass tag. I used a kit form this website that said appropriate for 172 ci engine. All the new parts seemed to match the old parts.

The tractor ran fine (without any real load, but I could drive it around the driveway) until I went to trailer it to a field nearby. When I started it to get it on the trailer, it seemed fuel starved and indeed the sediment bowl by the carburetor was bright rusty orange. I cleaned it out, cleaned the screen, did OK, but problem recurred in a week.

I disconnected the (new) fuel line at the carb and opened the valve under the tank- steady strong stream of clean gas (I strained it) .

I"ll reclean the carb, but I am confused where the rusty orange crud in the sediment bowl is coming from when the gas from the tank is so clean and flowing so well.

thanks in advance.

Bill,
I had the same problem with my 851 - rust in the sediment bowl. I tried to clean the gas tank - spent many hours cleaning it but the rust kept coming back. I bought a replacement tank from this site and it solved the problem.

Just a thought: Tank might look clean from looking down inside, but the roof of the tank (that you can't see) might be real rusty. Condensation gets up there. Fuel sloshing around may wash some fine rust down in the rest of the tank.

That would be my guess.
