Hello
I have a SelectOspeed Ford 4000 1963 Model 4 cylinder gas with 10 speed and two reverse. The problem I'm having is that I had it parked in the shop for seven years without starting it or moving it all. Today I installed a new battery, cleaned the carb and she runs like a dream except I cannot get it to go into gear. I have forced it to a point that the nut slipped in the housing. So I took the shifter apart, cleaned it up, greased it and put it back together tightening the nut real good. Now I still cannot get the shifter to move at all into any gear. The cable looks as good as new thankfully. I have tried it running and non running and it will not move at all. I have tried rocking the tractor thinking maybe that would move some gears around to assist me into shifting but I have not had any luck. I have read so many forums and I have decided to post here because it seems like you guys have a lot of experience with this tractor. I also want to comment that I've owned it for 15 years and have never ever had a problem until now due to my own negligence. Any advice would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks for all the great advice on your forum.

I'm no SOS expert, so take this with a grain of salt. .. it sounds to
me like your control valve is stuck, rusted from the years of
sitting. That would require removal of the trans cover and shift
cables... which requires carefully following the procedure in the
manual.

Fordfarmer,
I'm definately no expert on SOS either and that's the reason I walk away from them.

My childhood memories of my dad's the first generation Ford 6000 SOS wasn't a positive experience.

If you think about it that was over 50 years ago. How many SOS experts are still alive?

Hope Robbie has luck getting it going again.

Larry is still alive and well. Not sure how many years he has in him though!

To the OP, I'm with Fordfarmer, it sounds like the control valve is rusted up. You can rock the trans all you want, but that won't free it up. You'll need to remove the top cover and clean it up that way. Don't even think about doing it without a manual. It's not hard work, you just need to pay attention to detail.

Thanks, Bern! Robbie, Bern is absolutely correct! And, I'll also echo DO NOT ATTEMPT any of this without a proper service manual. Study the manual and follow it to a T.

1. Remove the shifter from the dash, separate it from the cable stub that goes into the transmission and verify that the shifter and upper cable assembly itself is not your problem. If this is not your problem . . .

2. remove the PTO cable assembly and transmission cover. Put a wrench on the control valve hex shaft and gently try to turn it. If it's stuck, make up some Hagen's Brew (1 part acetone to 1 part ATF) and soak the shaft supports and valve stems with it several times over a period of a few days. If this is not your problem . . .

3. you'll need to disassemble the control valve body halves and free up the valves or replace the control valve assembly.
