Ford 841 hydraulic lift

I have searched the archives and cannot find a solution. My 841 3 point lift raises to about 24" off the ground and is strong to that point, but will not raise to the full height. The pump is primed, appears to work fine, the oil is clean and full. I don't want to start tearing things apart without some idea of where the problem might lay. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Not to be dumb, but did someone shorten the chains limiting lift? Otherwise I would say something in the linkage under the cover is worn, broken or bent. You lift the lever which turns a shaft which eventually moves the control valve.

It seems unlikely to be a piston ring leak, as it lifts "strong" as you say.

Do you have manuals? Mine are at the lake 300 miles away, but there are good troubleshooting guides in both the I&T and the Ford repop.

Removing the cover is not a hard task, just very heavy. A hoist (even just a rope hoist) helps a lot.

if you play with the draft control does it change anything.. or even go into draft control.. does it give you full range of lift?

if yes, play on a cam pin replacement and linkage readjustment

I just went through something similar. My 1964 4000 (very similar if not the same) would lift without implement almost fully. With implement, it would not lift all the way up or stay up unless RPM was revved up. Even then, it would not stay up with an implement. It was a two part problem - (1) the o-rings that come with the kit that is commonly sold for the hydraulic lift cover and hydraulic cylinder, plus an o-ring for the check valve, which does not come with that kit, and (2) adjustment of draft/position control.

Either or both require taking the lift cover off, which can be a two-man job. Entire process took about 2.5 hours. Works almost 100% now, but definitely waaaay better and good enough to get the job done.

Thank you for responding and I'm sorry it took me so long to answer back but the system didn't notify me that there was an answer.

Anyway, I did try that and it didn't make a difference. The hitch operates very well - smooth, strong, and stays in any position. And the arms stay up for days without sinking back down.

Mine doesn't have chains so that can't be it.

I have not bought manuals yet...if I've got to tear it apart, it'll wait until winter. I'm in the middle of installing a OWB.

I did figure out how to make the forum send me a message when someone replies, though. :D [/quote]

Mine has good power and stays where you put it. Geez I hate to tear it apart. It's like when the doctor says "exploratory surgery".
