Ford 4500 Power Steering Question

Hi, I have a 68 4500 TLB. Its "new to me" when I got it i was told that the power steering didnt work and that it maybe needed fluid. I have the integrated hydraulic pump with no reservoir. At first it didnt work at all but i was able to muscle it around the yard. Decided to look into it today and got all the gunk cleaned out from around it and got it to turn right. Not left. When the drag bar is moved (Right hand Turn) it pushes it forward which moves the linkage backwards and pulls out on the actuator. This makes it turn right. I understand everything up until now... When you turn left it wants to push the actuator (on the hydraulic PS pump) in....its already retracted and " bottomed out" from where i turned right.. Where is it supposes to go??? How does it make it go the other way when the actuator is already all the way in... basically you have to muscle the assembly..

These are the diagrams and instructions you will
need.

The strap on spool valve doesnt have move very much to make a turn either direction. Linkage gets froze from lack lubrication. There is adjustment under radiator, very fun to get to.May have to pull nose and radiator and free everything up.I have had the fun of doing this more than once.

If got everything pulled off and am already there... I guess what i dont understand it that the linkage acuator only comes out maybe 1/8". then back in.. Each time it come out it actuates right turn... how does it get its left turn?

I appreciate the diagrams and pics :) I saw this on another forum and have been outside looking for these "stop screws" where the H3LL are they? Maybe I should post up a pic of what im seeing... would that help?

Here is what i have... Im looking for these set screws about 4" inches up from the back joint of the turnbuckle... Still dont understand how that hydraulic cylinder operates the other way? Am I missing something?[/img]

The adjuster screws are underneath. If you don't
have the hydraulic tank and radiator removed the
only way is to lie on your back under the tractor
and look up.

Ok. IM going to go look in 5 min or so and maybe take a pic if I cant find it... Am I following the Main control arm down to where it attaches to both left and right tie rods? Are they between the clevis pin and tie rod?

On a good note... the actuator does go in further... its hard as you know what though... its pretty dirty around the actuator cylinder... im gonna try to clean it up in case there is build up stopping it from going in further.. I guess at that point i could adjust the turnbuckle to be all the way in and in nuetral that way when i turn left there isnt as much slack...

I went out and looked at mine. Same P/S system. Only adjustment is turn buckle. What does it do with wheels of ground? Mine steered hard till put new kingpins in.

At first nothing... No PS either way... i removed a bunch of gunk from around the hydro and if i jerked the wheel hard enough to pull out the actuator it would work (right turn)... could not figure out for the life of me how the pump work to turn left... moving the wheels just moved the pump and all compressing the fluid back in. Tractor was Off.. I took the linkage off started the tractor and was able to force the actuator "in" and got left turn.. Im guessing just clean up around the pump and cylinders and adjust that turn buckle accordingly....

Which one are these and where can i get them? I noticed that the pin that hold the PS Hydro pump is split on the top.. So either its split really bad or just a plastic cap thats cracked... either way... i think new ones are in order...

They are right near (within an inch or two) where
the tie rod from the steering box link attaches.

4400-5000 have adjustment screws. 4500 has turnbuckle adjustment. You have worn out control linkage. Watch it while someone turns the steering wheel back and forth with motor stopped. Every place you see play will need to be rebushed/replaced to get power steering back.
