601 stalls when pto engaged

I just bought a 50's model 601 (not sure of the exact model) 4 speed converted to 12 volt gas powered tractor. It runs fine until I engage the pto and then it stalls out completely. Also, I can't push the choke all the way back in as it does the same thing. Any ideas?

4 speed say it is a 641 0r 631 0r 621. But the only one that came out with factory Hyds and PTO was the 841 unless ordered other wise.
As for stalling sounds like you have more then one problem.
Can you turn the PTO by hand when out of gear and engine not running?? If you can not you may have a locked up PTO bearing.
As for having to run it with choke on that could be weak spark or a carb problem. I would check spark and make sure it is a good blue/white and jump a 1/4 inch gap at all 4 plugs. If that checks out pull the carb drain plug and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas for 3 plus minutes

I'll check that. The pto does start turning when I let off the clutch but then the engine dies unless I push it back in. I can inch along with the clutch partially let off but then the pto isn't moving fast enough to really do anything (using a bush hog).

with no implement hooked up.. can you engage the pto?

doe sthe engine sound ok.. or is it missing on 1-2 cylingders.

these machines will run on 2 cyls, and have no power.

it sounds fine to me. The pto does turn but when I let out the clutch it dies. I haven't been at the house the last few days so I haven't had the chance to look at these things. I'll look at it Saturday. Thanks for the input.

i mean, can you run the tractor pto with no load on it. IE. no mower.. just the tractor pto. if the tractor stalls when just the pto comes on.. that's a bad sign!

no the pto runs it's just when I put it in gear and start to take off the tractor stalls out. If I remember correctly, I had it running in neutral (and maybe in reverse) but when I tried to go forward it stalled out.

quick question... does it stall out in any forward gear? and doe sit do it immediately.. or does it start to move some?

if it moves some.. does a lil choke help it?

yes, it was stalling out in all forward gears and i had to keep the choke out a bit to get it to go at all. If i put the choke all the way in it died.

(quoted from post at 18:01:38 09/04/14) sounds real lean or not fireing on all cyls
k, I ran it a little today. I took the spark plug wires off and put them back on one at a time. The first two made a big difference but the last two barely made a noticeable change in the way it was running. After I did that I took it out of the barn and tried it a little. I was able to mow the a path about 500' before it died. Bush hog was running good up until the end! Would that happen if it's not hitting all 4 cylinders? Or could it be that the wires/plugs are bad and their kind of hitting and missing? Also, what else could I do besides change them all out? I was getting pretty excited when it started working but then let down again when it died. Any advice greatly appreciated.

engines have a fireing order for the spark plugs

the fire order on those 4 cyl fords is 1-2-4-3

many people make the mistake of wiring them 1-2-3-4

this makes a machine that starts and run mostly on 2 cyls.. with 3-4 not doing much.. she will run.. but has no power.

i'm telling you to check your firing order.

find #1 wire on dizzy, then check to see if the next wire is #2, then if the next wire runs to plug 4, then the last nipple runs to plug 3.

follow?
