Threads on steering wheel retaining nut

Got one of those new shiny acorn nuts to hold the steering wheel down on my 641. Visually, looks to be the same as the old rust & paint nut that it will be replacing. However, the new nut won't screw on past a thread of two. Threads on the shaft are nice, and very clean, and the old nut runs down nice and proper. Just the new one acts like it has slightly different threads.

I saw from the catalogs that it is supposed to be 11/16-20 threads. Wondering if I got one that was made with an 11/16-16 of 11/16-18 instead. Hard to see a difference between the threads of the two nuts with the naked eye.

Any of y'all heard of a bad batch of acorn nuts? Heaven forbid I put that old thing back on there. Gotta have a nice shiny new one!

Thanks,
Kevin

I had the same thing happen to me. I kept the one that didn't fit and about five years later I welded it onto a rod for a knob.

Should be easy enough to try it on a spare bolt right?
If it fits and the old nut doesn't, that would give it away.
A tap would work too if you happen to have the right one.

messy, import plating done after thread cutting.
run into it a lot.
pretty much gotta run a tap thru any plated part nowadays.
re-tapping the blind, deep hole on a NAA, Hundred, governor compensating spring assembly will really try your patience.......
I wish they would just leave stuff bare and spray some oil on it.

Thanks guys.

Just looked up that oddball 11/16-20 tap.....40 bucks! Maybe painting up that old rusty acorn nut might not be so bad of a deal after all.

I just ordered the nut from a different place and got the right one.

(quoted from post at 15:51:37 09/04/14) Use a 1/2-20 or 1/4-20 tap to scrape the threads.

That's a good point. Got to look at this thing under magnification and I'm pretty confident it is as NNP says: Poor (thick) plating. Some plating is chipping off on the first two threads where it started onto the shaft.

Gonna try that tonight. Thanks for the tip.

Kevin

Tried scraping with a 1/4-20 tap, wasn't able to get much off of it. Better, but still way too tight to thread on. Gonna look for another nut.

Thanks,
Kevin

Sorry to bump up such an old post but being Canadian I run into metric threads all the time. Try the steering wheel nut on the correct size metric bolt and see what happens.

Did what showcrop suggested and got another nut. Came in a Dennis Carpenter bag and was the lower cost one, but it fit OK. Tight, but did go on. I'll post up the Carpenter part number for reference. (Assuming this site will carry it since it's pretty common...)
