A Question from Future Me

Gentleman (and ladies?),

Mowing pasture this summer has got me thinking: Is there any way to convert my 841S to have live PTO? I know some of the 5-speed 801's had live PTO, but I don't think any of the 841's left the factory with it. Is that only a feature of the 5-speed transmission, or can you "bolt on" the necessary additions to give my 4-speed transmission live PTO?

I ask this knowing it's mostly a pipe dream, anyway. But future me may be filthy rich and want to be able to stop his tractor without stopping the PTO.

You can not make a 4 speed live pto. The closest you can get is an over running clutch that goes on your pto shaft. You can start the mower spinning, then clutch and put the tractor in gear. You can also stop without the flywheel effect of the mower pushing the tractor into the tree you are heading for ;) Not all 5 speeds are live pto either. Only the X6X 5 speed trannies, not the x5x.

Thanks, Steve. I figured life for future me wouldn't be so good!

We're just talking about a 7 ft sickle bar mower. Not a 6 foot flywheel (aka bush hog).

I seem to recall a Sherman add on "live PTO" kit for the Jubilee.
I'm assuming it was available or would work for the later tractors.
It wasn't true live PTO, but did stop the tractor movement.
It is probably as rare as hen's teeth if it was ever made for an
841, so not likely a viable option. Just thinking out loud.
Future Me might want a newer tractor with live PTO for that
purpose. He might also want one with power steering. Oh, and
one with a loader, and another one with a cab, and............ ;)

I don't know who makes it but I have seen an add-on
hydraulically operated PTO . Can't remember what
make of tractor it was on, but being an add-on unit
it should be adaptable to just about any make of
tractor.

:>)

The only practical way is to swap in a live PTO 5 speed transmission or an independent PTO S-O-S transmission.

An even more practical solution is to sell the 841 and buy a replacement tractor with live PTO.

Thanks for the responses, guys. Not looking to sell, as this tractor was my grandfather's.

Has anyone else seen what Royse is talking about? Wonder if that add-on for the Jube would be "forwards-compatible" with the 841?

According to John Smith's web site, the Sherman Live PTO option was originally made for the 8N. Look about 1/3 of the way down this page:

It doesn't mention whether it worked with any earlier or later models though.

if you google "naa live pto" you should see a post from a keith weber from 2006 showing a pic of his NAA with live pto option. I saw the same lever on a naa at an auction about 15 years ago.

Hello Steve , It is quite evident you have no idea what the difference between transmission , live and independent pto are and that an over running clutch does not change and type of pto to another type of pto . It does however as you said stop the flywheel affect of the mower on lightweight low horsepower tractors like the 9N 2N 8N and NAA tractors . However you are incorrect as a 4 speed CAN BE converted to live pto if you have the time , talent and the money to do so , it may not be worth it considering you buy tractors with live or independent pto cheaper but that was not the question . Thanks Tony

Hello Radara , If you had the time , talent and the money you could convert you 841 to live pto with the Late Model NAA live pto kit . I have one Brand New Old Stock in the original Ford box for just that reason to build it just because I can . The only thing I can't do however is run one of my Elenco 4x4 kits and the live pto together , there is just not enough room inside the rear axle housing for both and I rather have the four wheel drive as I grew up Farming on my Uncle's place which had all old IH tractors with non live pto and learned just fine cutting hay , bailing hay , cutting corn for silage all done without live pto so I have no need for live pto , I am not saying it is not easier sometimes to have live pto just not an absolute . Thanks Tony

Interesting. It seems as if not all hope is lost. Does that NAA kit "bolt on" behind the hydraulic reservoir, in the rear axle housing? I'm guessing it has a second clutch. Would I have to split the rear drive?

Anyone else have any insight into this kit?

The live PTO option for a Ford NAA was made by both Sherman and Dearborn. I recently bought an extremely rare Dearborn version right here on the YT classifieds (Cheap!) It is a Sprague clutch which fits on the pinion and has a small auxiliary hydraulic pump which fits between the proofmeter cable and original pump. The unit I got is complete with pump, lines and side plates. Shows that if you really search, you can find them.

Point of interest; A man in Ohio has recently posted in the regular classified ads on this site a Jubilee with a Sherman hi/lo and a live PTO. (No photos). It is up for $2600. The Sherman is worth about a grand and who knows about the PTO. He says it is in running order. If I was anywhere near Ohio I would jump on this one. Your getting the Jube for about 600 to 800 dollars.
