Fuel Gauge doesn't work... where to start?

Probably not a new one here, but I didn't find exactly what I was
looking for in the search.

What are the first steps I should go through in trying to trouble
shoot a fuel gauge that isn't working. Is there a "common" problem
that I should be looking for? As it stands now, it doesn't do anything
... just sits on "E". I'd love to have it working so that I can stop the
guessing when it comes to filling up.

Thanks.

Remove the wire off of he sender unit and ground it(just a second or two) If the gauge moves, the sender unit is bad. If not the problem, the wire from the junction block should have a fuse in it. .If you have electricity to the gauge, and still no go, probably the gauge. . The gauge and sending unit should be from the same company.
