8N Starter question

I just converted from a 6 volt positive ground to a 12 volt negative ground and everything went very well and the tractor starts and runs better than it ever did. However now the starter motor is not behaving. When I hit the starter button the motor winds out but does not engage. I can get it to engage eventually by giving it short bursts at the stater button. It will take several attempts and then it will engage.I will take any advice on my next steps to pursue with this.My research prior to installing the 12 volt system was you do not have to replace the starter from the 6 volt system. It did not do this before the conversion so perhaps the change has damaged it in some way. Thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge with me.

Defective, damaged or worn out starter drive and/or flywheel ring gear.

Operating a 6V starter from 12V is very hard on starter drives and ring gears.

I would begin by removing starter & washing ALL grease/oil/dirt/etc. from the shaft that drive runs on & re-try it.

I agree with Dean. But I suspect that the ring gear is moving around the flywheel. Take out the starter and mark the ring gear location on the flywheel. Reinstall starter, try it, and then remove the starter and take a look to see of the ring gear moved. Also, when you have the starter out, grind a little relief in the bell housing at the 2 o'clock area. It will make taking out and reinstalling the starter very much easier.

lots of good sugestions.

ditto on checking the starter shaft and drive. spray it clean with brake cleaner.. and DO make sure flywheel ring gear is not loose
