I picked up the 72 for a project to sell. Now I have a problem. The 72 has the high low range trans which I like much better that the 63. The 63 is in much better shape cosmetically and runs smoother as it is a 4cyl. The sheet metal can be fixed and time is not an issue ( retirement is grand). The 72 runs fine and needs small item fixed such as gas gauge, temp gauge and leaking seal on steering box. The 63 needs nothing. Only issue is the lift cylinder leaks slowly. It takes about two days for it to drop. Before I put one up for sale is there something else I should be looking at to help decide?

It should never be your goal to have just one tractor. Keep them both, at least for a while, and see which one you like working with the best.
 
They are pretty much a horse apiece.
Is either of them a diesel? Either have live PTO? Power steering?
What tranny does the 4 cyl heve?
Wheels and tires can be swapped to keep the best ones for your own.
Though I'm more familiar with the 3 cyls and think they are a bit easier to work on I would keep the one with the most or best options.
But Garry makes a great point too - keep them both - for a while and run them at all the various tasks you do. Figure out which one you prefer. Then decide.
 
Both are gas, the 4cyl has a 4 speed, the 3cyl has a 3 speed with high and low range. Both have live pto. no power steering
 

Reminds me of a story: Years ago a friend of mine was dating this girl, nice girl, they had been dating for quite some time. One evening he went to pick her up for an evening out, her father met him at the door. He asked, "what are your plans for my daughter"? My friend replied, "I don't think we should rush into anything". To which he replied, "you know...she is 6 months along".

In your case why should you need to rush into anything - keep them both - they sound like very nice tracotrs.
 
I tried to reply to this last evening. Kept getting the message, "Replies disabled."

Not only did four speeds of the '63 vintage not have live PTO, I question whether the '72 6 speed could have either. But then my knowledge of that series of tractors is limited.
 
A 72 2000 with a 6 speed could have live PTO, but it was more likely on a 3000 with the 6 speed than the 2000. Dealers ordered 2000's as low price machines and by '72 I think Ford had dropped the 4 speed out of the line-up, so the 2000 with the 6 speed was the least expensive tractor/trans combination, and live PTO would just raise the price, so most dealers ordered them with trans PTO, while the 3000's were sold as a "step up" from the 2000 and were more likely to have live PTO, power steering, and other options that folks looking for the lowers price didn't want or need.
 
I usually have more tractors around here than I can count on my fingers...........and toes,
so I'm the wrong guy to ask.
But, they both sound good and handy.
I'd keep them both.
When I have indecision....and sell something anyway...I always regret it.

Example, I have one NAA that has loaded tires, 3 sets of chains on it and a front homemade snowblade.
Every spring and fall I used to remove/add very heavy stuff...ugh.
Another tractor...or 3, solved that ordeal.
The winter NAA is setting quietly in the shed, fully equipped and waiting for the snow to fly.......
 

All things being equal, I would go with the 3 cyl,especially with the additional gears... It will out do the other in all aspects.
 
I was going to post the model numbers of a 2000 with
a 6 speed with and without live PTO. But according
to my '73 sales literature, 6-speeds only had
transmission PTO, for both 2000's and 3000's. But
that may not be 100% accurate... it also says the
Select-O-Speed was not available for the 2000 or
4000.
 
My error, neither tractor has live PTO. My knowledge of tractors is limited but I do like working on them. My use is usually moving around trailers, civil war cannons, and occasionally using grader box or a blade.

Sean often mentions 6 speeds with LPTO. I have never seen one, always had the perception that 8 speeds were the only tranny other than SOS that could have LPTO in the 2000/3000 size tractor. Never really got excited enough about it to start the debate.
 
The I&T FO-31 manual at the beginning of the section on the 6 speed says the 4 speed was phased out mid 1970. Then they go on to show the usual overhaul procedure - both of the lpto and non lpto models.

Not a problem. Ought to lower when you get off the
tractor anyway.

I would keep both for a while. Keep the box blade
hooked up to one and then you have the other free to
move stuff around.
 
You guys are a great resource for tractor info. The problem is if I keep both it will be a marital issue. How are you all on Marriage counseling?

I'd use both for a while to see if I liked one
better than the other, like someone else said. I'd
most likely keep the 3-cylinder myself.
If you HAVE to sell one, advertise both, with your
asking prices a little on the high side, and just
let your local market decide which you keep.
