Or at least what I think is one. Diesel with a 5
speed. My uncle just bought it and were on our way
home with it from weedsport NY.

If it is a 5 speed it could be one of 4 850, 860, 851, or 861.
Only way to be sure is check the model number on the flat spot behind the starter above the 2 bolt holes.

In addition to checking model I'd on the bellhousing, check the engine casting number, both engines and trannies can be swapped eroubd. Engines from 53-64 all swap directly, trannies from 55-64 all bokt up, though some brake and spline issues must be overcome, however overcoming them I not impossible.

I guess my picture didn't post. I'll try again.

If the diesel engine is original then it wouldn't be a 850 or 860. They didn't make diesels until the '01 series.

It could be a 651, 661, 851 or 861. Engine casting number would tell us the engine size and would narrow it down to the 6xx or 8xx. Or get a picture of the rear axle showing the mount for the top link and we can tell you if it's the 6xx or 8xx rear axle housing.

Hood says 8 series.

Fenders say **1 series (as does desiel engine). Small exhaust says 6 series but not reliable.

Need photos of rear (and front).

Like the 24" rears (and the PS) but 24" tires are expensive.

Here's some more pics. The spot where the model and serial is corroded something terrible. I can make out a D but can't make out anything else. It does have the bigger exhaust on the intake side. Thanks.

The rear axle is an 801 series which is larger than a 601 series. Did someone break the attachment lug for the 3PH top link out of the rear axle and weld it back in?
Believe it or not the 601D and 801D used the exact same intake and exhaust manifolds so the exhaust pipe is the same size on both.

That's an 801 series grill and an 8xx rear axle, so that plus the 5 speed makes it either a 851 or 861, the only difference being the 861 has live PTO with the double clutch and the 851 has trans driven PTO and a single clutch.

With the engine running and the transmission in gear, let the clutch out slowly to see if the PTO starts spinning before the transmission engages. If it does, then it's an 861. If it doesn't it still might be an 861 with the clutch misadjusted.

It does have the two stage clutch. So it appears to
be the 861. I appreciate the help. I know my
Massey's pretty well but am short when it comes to
Fords. The PO thought it was a 4000. I know enough
to know that wasn't the case.

The 4 cylinder 4000 series which replaced the 801 series was pretty much the same tractor as the 801 series except for the sheet metal and the grill. The later 3 cylinder 4000 series is completely different though.

Although yours is painted blue like the 4000, it has the 801 series grill and sheet metal.

i'll bet that is just a rough casting mark. I have seen a few 8xx/9xx with a rough patch back there at the rocker area too.
