I'm working on a whitlock fel backhoe for a friend and need some help identifingit. It looks like a ford 4 or 5000 tractor engine and hood. On the left side of the bellhousing sitting on the tractor are these numbers. on top is 9M08B under that is BB70A10. The backhoe instructions looked to be German on a plate riveted over the engling instructions. Can anybody help me identify this rig? Thanks.

9M08B on the left side just means that the transmission was assembled on December 8 of some year that ended in a 9 (1969, 1979, 1989). BB70A10 doesn't mean anything to me.

Numbers in the same spot on the right side would be more helpful. They might also be on a foil sticker on the under side of the right hood panel, above the battery.

In trying to tell the difference between a 5000 and a 4000, the 5000 had a 4 cylinder engine. A 4000 of the same time frame as the 5000 with the same squared sheet metal had a 3 cylinder engine. There was an earlier 4000 that had a 4 cylinder engine, but it had the curved sheet metal similar to the hundred and '01 series.

Whitlock Diggers were built here in England in Great Yeldham, Essex. The digger was called a "Dinkum Digger".They were eventually taken over by Hymac in 1972 and the later versions painted Lime Green.

The early versions were based on the Fordson Major tractor. The later ones I have seen and used were based on a Ford 4000. They had a weak point in the pivot on the top of the digger arm and most machines I have seen have been heavily plated and welded.

I would suspect your number is "B********" which would indicate a Basildon built tractor. With Whitlock going out of business in 1972 I would again suspect your tractor would be a 1969.
