Replacing generator on 3 cyl 4000

Lucas generator is not working so I think I want to replace the generator with an alternator but hate to pay $300+ or lose the tack. Are there any alternatives?

If your 4000 is new enough, it could be converted to the newer style drive like the x600 series use...but then you need to replace the dash cluster as well. Probably just as expensive. I've heard that some Massey's use a alternator with a tach drive that MAY work, and is much cheaper than the conversions for Fords...but I don't know of anyone who has tried it.

Are you sure the generator is faulty or is it the regulator?
My 5000 had been converted to a non-tach alternator by a PO but I got the generator in the deal. I took it to a GENERATOR shop and it checked out fine. The VR was defective and I replaced it with a NOS Ford VR. That was 5 years ago and it's still working. The owner of the GENERATOR shop confirmed that the Lucas generator does not deserve its bad rap and the imported (cheap) VR's are the problem.

Hey soundguy,

Would you post that procedure again about testing the generator by removing the belt and seeing if it will motor?

I printed out the procedure some time ago when you posted it, but I can't find it right now.

The generator light started glowing on my 1973 Ford 2000 yesterday, and I need to do some intelligent problem determination before "flying off the handle".

Thanks for any help.

The generator is losing polarity. I polarize it and when I shut if off it loses polarity. Don't have the means of really testing it, but the red light comes back on. My mechanic suggested testing the generator and if it is OK, getting a regulator. Where do I get a good one, I understand the e-bay specials are junk.

I have converted several Tractors using the delco alternator for a 165 Massey. They require a external regulator. DB Electrical is selling them on Ebay for $109 If your tach swings clockwise it will work with the stock cable. On the alternator you will find 2 termanils R and F F goes to F on the regulator R goes to #1 hook 2 and 3 on the regulator together and go to switched 12V

If you can get the 10dn Delco with tach drive previously mentioned with an external regulator for less money than the 10si conversion, go ahead and get it. It will require the same bracket mods to bolt in place but will otherwise work fine. The 10dn and 10si use the same physical case. The difference is in the rotors and the internal regulation of the 10si..
Personally I wouldn't waste any time on the generator.
I've converted several to Delco alt's now. Some used a basic off the shelf 10si and updated instrument cluster/drive, some used the expensive 10si conversion kit and maintained their original instruments... and others I've just hauled off whatever crap Motorolla/Lucas/ Magnetti alt that was on there and installed a Delco. Only reason I do that is because the Delco is readily available to me over the counter locally for about 1/4 the cost.

Engine off, key off, belt off, jumper bat hot to field and arm tabs on Genny, it should motor, is remove arm and field spades from Genny before jumper test, is disconnect reg from Genny first.

This motor tests and polarizes, if it passes this test hook back up, start up, if no charge to bat and light on, jump arm to bat, if voltage on bat goes up( hi throttle shoul yeild about 14v), suspect wireing or vreg cutout, was to remove cover for a looksee
