641 resto progress pics

Seeing the other pics of nicely painted machines inspired me to post a few of my own.

Been working on this one since February.....1958 621, dressed up as a 641. Started as a 12V conversion and a front main seal rework, then morphed into a full-blown restoration. Might have it running this weekend. We'll see. After that, I'll get working on the tin.

Disclaimer: It looks Chevy orange due to the fluorescent lighting, and more so with the camera flash.

What a beautiful job of painting on the 601, especially the detailing, but why did you paint the throttle rod red? Yes,I know,it is your tractor, so paint it as you like, but the throttle rod sure caught my eye.

(quoted from post at 23:36:49 08/27/14) Ok Kevin, you win! LOL Beautiful work!

Thanks. Actually, we both win. Yours looks great also. I just let OCD get the best of me.

I'm just glad to see these old machines getting restored.

My brother tells me I will have to pick up another one to work.....naaaah, I'm gonna run this one when its done!

Wayne,

Thanks. Shouldn't the throttle rod be red? For some reason, I was thinking that since the brackets were bolted fast (at the starter and at the steering box) before the whole machine was painted, and since the throttle rod is "captured" by those brackets, then it would have gotten the red treatment with the tractor? Or should it just be natural steel like the other two rods?

I took the other rods to the wire wheel, and then clear coated them both. I could probably do the same for the throttle rod pretty easily.

(quoted from post at 11:16:44 08/28/14) nice.. very nice.

what prep did you do on the manifold. is that the new cast paint?

Thanks.

Manifold and the cast elbow are new aftermarket parts. Gave them a good degreasing and used the POR-15 cast iron manifold paint. Muffler and clamps I painted with POR-15 silver exhaust paint. Both of these paints bake on and are typically very very durable.

(quoted from post at 12:53:49 08/28/14) What is black boot on gen? Never seen one before.

The genny is a 12V Ford unit ('56-64 pass car/truck), which has the four open holes in the back. Tractor genny has only one vent hole in the back, and it faces down. Ford used the boot on pass car/truck applications to keep water out. Of course, this will be even more important with the genny out in the open on a tractor. Anyway, the boot is a repop from Dennis Carpenter, and can be found in their car catalogs. About 20 bucks. Gotta credit Tony Jacobs for steering me this direction.

hank you.

Your tractor is SO perfect. I'm working on fixing all the mechanical things wrong with my Jubilee before trying to restore it to somewhere near that level. Seeing your pictures gives me dozens of questions about your restoration. Have you given any thought to doing a detailed write up of what and how, did you clear all the un painted hardware, where you bought parts, and what paint, and and and.
Thanks

Yes, please do! Looking to do something similar for my 841...when funds become available ;-)

Yeah, I think you got a bit carried away with the seal and conversion. It looks really good. Great detail in your work.

very impressive work.
I've seen push em on and off a trailer, park em on velvet, with mirrors everywhere, restored cars, that didn't look as good as your tractor.

Thanks guys for all the kind words.

I definately did get carried away with things, as when I had to replace some hardware, it came to mind that "I should do this for almost all the hardware. Would be a good contrast". My thought was to imagine how it would have rolled down the line, things would have been bolted to it. Those bolts would not have been painted red, but rather plated. Now, I'm sure for the purist, I didn't get some of this right, as it's my first tractor restoration, but I'm not necessarily going for the 100% original restoration. I have quite a few reproduction parts on it. If I ever do another one, there's bound to be some improvements. Also, funnier thing is that this tractor is gonna get worked when done. Some light stuff with the blade, York rake, etc. But it will not be in a museum (nor do I think it's that nice).

Anyway, most of the yellow zinc plated hardware are just simple bolts/nuts that can be obtained from Lowes or McMaster-Carr. I tried to use Grade 8 stuff where possible. Stuff such as the linkages were simply cleaned with a wire wheel, then degreased and clearcoated.

I'll try to post up some more pics. Y'all might want to look up my other posts. I think I did post some more recent pics under "It's alive" or something like that. Has the tank and radiator on it. That tank is going to get removed and a new reproduction installed early next week.

Thanks,
Kevin

Do you have a source for the Manifold and elbow? Mine is cracked.

This site carries the manifold:

Not sure about the elbow from here, but it is a common aftermarket part and I'll bet if you call them, they will have it. Not on the site, though.

Thanks,
Kevin
