Ford 2000 coil

Helping a friend to get his Ford 2000 tractor running. I tuned it up. I put all new parts, plugs, wires, points, condenser, cap, rotor, coil. Checked timing & mechanical advance, rebuilt the carb, and cleaned air filter. After a month he complained of hard starting especially when warm. I noticed the coil had oil in the tower where the coil wire is inserted( the old one was also leaking oil and the wire had swelled from the oil). After putting on a new coil it starts like new. Is the coil overheating somehow? The coil I replaced said on it"s side "for internal resistor" also "made in China". Is there a resistor or should there be a resistor in the High tension circuit? Thanks for the thoughts,original 6 volt system/generator.

You sort of answered your own question. You got a coil made in the land of almost right so yep it was almost right so find one made in the U.S.A. and be right

i'm gonna make a few guesses here since you decided not to provide full info.

1, this is a 4 cyl 2000

2, this is still a 6v setup

3, you are using a 6v round coil.

if all this is true.. unless you have a real odd coil.. it should not need a resistor.

how about throw us a bone and tell us WHAT COIL you have.

There should never be a resistor in the high tension circuit except for "resistor plugs" if the application calls for them, which neither the 3 or 4 cylinder 2000 series did.

Since you say that it is the original 6 volt system, I assume it is a 4 cylinder 2000. There should not be a resistor in the low tension circuit on a 6 volt 4 cylinder 2000 either.

es this is a 1962 Ford 2000 4 cyl farm tractor, as I stated it is 6V(positive ground).The latest coil I installed is a 6v round Car Quest 26207 coil. The instructions state that this coil is for "use without a external resistor". The last coil was also for "use without a external resistor", but was a Tisco brand. I am knowledgeable about Ballast resistors in 12 v systems but never hear of a resistor in 6v system. Just wondering if something is wrong that the coil only lasted 1 month and started leaking oil from the top. Most likely Chinese junk. Thanks Kurly
