Hi, all you 801 owners.Today, I had a guy that own a 801 to help
me bush hog nine acres.I was on my 74 3 cyl. 4000, and we both
had five foot hogs. The weeds was about chest high and thick as
the hair on a dog back. I have you to no that 801 perform great. A
real work horse.

while a hair gas hungry.. a 901 or 801 are pretty much a 50hp engine machine depending on how/where you measure her and how you have her aspirated and fed... pto hp is a few less.

Now. general rule of thumb is about 5pto hp per foot of mower.

due to weight and size of an 801/901, you generally cap out at a 6' mower max or you get tail wagging the dog issues. that means that on a 5' mower.. you have a built in cushion.. you are likely running 9hp per foot on that mower.

It's also well established that waist high stemmy weeds mow easier than lush grass.

Given all that. it's not stretch to see a large red tiger mowing stuff that completely obscures the tractor.

Mine has been a hoss from day one. I liked the MF-65 better when the tractors were new but the 801 proved to need less repair as time passed. Tractors came and went over the years but I could never trade it in. My favorite is early 4000s.

801 series was a good tractor.
Lots of power, too much for the tires lots of times.

While your 74 is a very nice tractor, with a lot of refinements and improvements from the factory,
You both were basically sitting on the same machine....
