thrust bearing

Here is what was in the 841's front axle.
The thing on the left is all that remained of the thrust bearing. There were about 8 steel balls trapped in there, but that was it. Inner race was long gone.
The ring on the right was up above the race fragment. Apparently this happened before, but nobody dug out the earlier race.
Can't wait to see what the other side looks like!

That's actually in BETTER shape than my left-hand side one was on my 841. The ball bearings had worn a channel in one side of the spindle housing.

Did yours have a loader?
Mine did, and I would guess too much weight is what
caused the bearings to disintegrate.

I think Ford had a heavy duty axle available with a thicker spindle. Not sure when Ford started producing these. Seems I read that dealers would often install these when putting a loader on a tractor.

Finished the other side today. It had been rebuilt more recently. The bearing was in 2 pieces, but was still functioning and came out easily.

If it ever had a loader, it was only for a few years very early on in its life. My grandfather bought it used in the early-to-mid 1960s, and he never had a loader on it.
