Alternator exchange and wiring?

New to me 2600. PO had just had the alternator rebuilt, but the wires were loose and may not be wired correctly. It's not working. May have fried the diodes...I don't know. Just got my books in and will do some tests.

Question is, can I just put a 10si with an internal VR in, and wire it so the idiot light on the dash still works?

Putting a 10SI on it shouldn't be too hard.
Most of the wiring will be the same. But since the oem alt had an external Vreg you will have to look at the schematic and see how to clip that out of the circuit.

Most of the time when a alt is used you can take the wires loose at the regulator and jump them to complete the circuit to work with a 10SI... The wires don't know what alternator they are hooked 2...

Yea...guess I knew the answer is Yes. Should have asked HOW? Unless someone knows offhand, I'll need to research to see if I can find out what voltage and source (from alternator or VR?) is used to turn off the light. Don't want to fry the dash unit.

If I put a 10si on board I would hope to do away with the external VR. New book does have a good schematic, so maybe I can figure that out.

Beanmedic,
Look at the wires coming to that Alt. There will be one heavy gauge wire. I think it is the brown one at the bottom. Use that to get power from the 10si to the battery.
Next pick any of the others that run back to the voltage regulator. At the VR, disconnect all the wires. Find the one that goes to the Alt lamp in the gauge cluster and use a wire nut to join those.
After that, find that heavy wire that came from the Alt, there should be a heavy wire that runs from the VR to the battery. Hook those together. If you can not find that wire, just run a 10 gauge wire to the Battery or where the Battery cable hooks to the solenoid.
Then just wire nut the other wires at the VR and the Alt. Most are not needed.
For the 2 small wires on the 10si, you use the wire that goes to the light and a jumper that goes over to the battery wire.

This is all not that hard. It just looks complicated.

If the wiring gets you too confused, you could just run the 2 wires new and unhook the rest.

Watch out for the oil pressure wire. It runs with the alt wires in that location.

Oh everyone correct anything you see wrong here. I am going by memory from when I did my 7200 back in the late 1980's!!!!

his ought to get you there:

Thanks guys. This is exactly what I needed!

Had looked and searched archives for a wiring diagram like this. Wondered if you had one JMOR. Thanks!
