Ford 871 Tractor Questions - Transmission and Hydraulics

Hey guys! Found a nice looking Ford on Craigslist
down the road from me a couple hours. It looks nice
and I think the price is right, but I have a few
questions before I drive 2hrs to go look at it. IG
is advertised as an 801, but I believe its an 801
series, and actually an 871 tractor.

Anyway, guy says transmission is good and goes into
all forward and reverse gears (has Select-O-Speed)
but it won't shift into "Park". Is this something
major or do you have any ideas why?

Secondly, if I wanted to add a small loader, will
the factory hydraulics handle a fully hydraulic one
with two-way cylinders or will I need to add a front
auxiliary pump for just the loader. I'm not sure how
the hydraulics are set up on these. Guy says it has
one set of outlets at the rear.

In really don't know much about these tractors...I'm
looking for a good little utility though and do have
some experience on a Ferguson TO-30 and Ford 8n;
though I want something a little bigger now with
hydraulics, live PTO and power steering. Thanks for
the input!!

You are correct in that 801 is the series, and 871 is one of the two Select-O-Speed models within the 801 series. The other S-O-S model is the 881, which had the "Deluxe" dual speed independent PTO with 540 and 1000 rpm plus ground speed PTO, where the 871 only had a single speed 540 rpm PTO.

Not shifting into park could be as simple as the cable not being adjusted properly, or it could be a problem with the detent on the control valve.

The factory 3 point hydraulics has enough power (psi) to run a loader, but it will be very slow. The pump is only rated for around 4.5 gpm, and for a loader you really want at least 14 gpm. You'll probably be finding a used loader from another 600/601/800/801 series anyway, and hopefully it will still have the front mount pump included.

As far as the shifter thing goes, it could also just be the alignment of the indicator face at the shifter. If it starts with the handle all the way down -if the transmission lockout switch isn't bypassed- it will be in park. Then 1 click up should be the R2, a second click R1 etc. There is a procedure to align this plate. To double check the lockout switch- raise the handle 1 click and see if it will turn over. Get a shop manual BEFORE trying to adjust anything and read it several times. Guessing does not do this transmission any good. And advice from this forum helps too.
Good luck with your endeavor.

How can I tell if the lockout switch has been bypassed? Thanks!

Generally speaking is the Select-O-Speed transmission too and something that's serviceable or would I be better off staying away? Thanks again!

If the switch is bypassed, it will start in any gear. Make sure you are on the seat when you try!
If the switch is working properly, it will only start in Park, though depending on cable adjustment or indicator plate alignment it may show other than Park. Once you start it- move the selector in each position (use the little inching pedal that is in the normal clutch location) and check that you have 2 reverse gears, a neutral where it can coast and then 10 forward gears. Some gears will powershift without using the inching pedal pretty well and some might be a little jumpy depending on ratio being changed. Parts for these are harder to come by than the 4 speed/5 speeders- but I do like mine for various reasons
