861 brake drum stuck

Anyone have suggestions short of the hot wrench for removeing a stubborn brake drum on an 800 Ford? I removed three flat retainers from lug bolts then cleaned face of drum and found no screws holding drum to axle. There is some rust between lugs and holes in drum where retainers were removed that has soaked in PB Blaster two days. Shoes arn't touching drum and axle turns freely. I was unable to loosen the drum with a heavy hammer.

Clean the hub flange with a wire brush.

Penetrating oil around flange and lug studs will help.

A 2 or 2 1/2 lb hammer and patience will remove it. Tap repetitively around the OD of the drum from behind. Strike firmly but do not wail on it.

Hobo,

I'm trying to make sense of what you wrote ans either you or I didn't have enough coffee yet this morning, or maybe I'm just a northerner that can't understand "southern". I think this is what you were trying to say:

use a pipe or a socket that will fit over the lugs or axle and knock her loose... Have at it with a hammer.

So you're saying to try to move it in the opposite direction a little bit first to break it loose?

Knocker loose "your favorite Penetrating oil"

Slip the pipe are what ever you come up with over each stud and hammer away on the pipe to break the bond hub to stud are center section of hub to axle...

I thought it was a good tip tho I have not tried it... Some of use have seen some mean ones and have had to use a fire wrench as a last resort...

I've worked on a couple of these tractors that had the drums really stuck to the hub and if soaking and hitting it didn't work I just took a torch and heated around the hub (on the drum) a little bit while tapping on the outer edge of the brake drum and they popped loose then. my 2 cents worth Greg NE

I've used a similar technique by striking inward toward the hub between the studs with a large punch or piece of pipe.

It does help to break ehe corrosion and is yet another good tip for the tip box.

I have been squirting on more PB Blaster and going at it with the 40 oz hammer on and off for 3 days now without progress. I have hit the drum between the lugs several times but not as hard as will be possible useing a pipe. That is a good tip, thanks. I have done about as much damage over the years with heat as I have helped so that will be last resort. Compounding the problen with heat is that my torch is small for plumbing and hvac work so it doesn't allow quickly heating and getting off before getting seals hot. Thanks and keep the tips coming.

Every time I've had a stuck one I used the oxy/acy torch to heat the drum around the lug bolts and center hole. You can actually hear the drum "pop" when the rust breaks loose. There's no need to heat it hot enough to do any damage. The axle hub is a huge heat sink and you won't get it hot enough to damage any seals.
