Ford 740 puller

Has anyone ever pulled or seen a ford 740 pull? I was thinking of pulling one in the 3500 and 4500 dead weight. Is it possible to change the gears or tranny with an 850 or another model for a slow first gear?

We have a fellow forum member who pulls a 740.
Whoops butt with it too! Just getting started in this pic.
Yes, you could change the tranny if needed, I'd
have to defer to others on exactly which ones will fit.

Yes, all of the 600/700/800/900 transmissions are interchangeable. You don't want one for pulling but an X60 transmission requires it's unique flywheel and clutch.
Even the very early X01 transmissions will interchange. Then Ford changed the splines and left brake crossover shaft which makes it more difficult to swap.

Being a X40 means you could put a Sherman in it, giving you lower and more speeds. I have been pulling a 960 on both sled and stoneboat for about twelve years and never thought about needing a lower gear. It would just make it easier to break traction and spin out.

Of course you can but you will be competing against 9** tractors which are more powerful and for practical purposes weigh the same.

A Sherman combination transmission or a 5 speed would be helpful if you plan to use 38" wheels.

You can of course, install a 192 engine and continue to claim that it is a 740. Competitive tractor pulling is like DC: Everyone lies.

How light can you get the 950's, do they do any good in the 3500 dead weight classes seeing they are lightened so much?
Thanks

While I enter my 960 in 3500 and 4000 in a sled pull I usually enter 4000 and 4500 in a stone boat pull. I have 15.5 x38s on it as well as weight racks front and rear and wheelie bars. I do OK with it. I usually place out of classes with 10-15 entries. You can do well with 14.9x28s on it, and should be able to hang plenty of weight on the front on a tight track. The length of chain is a huge factor on a stone boat. On a four foot chain it will be difficult to break traction but on a ten foot you will need the weight on the back.
