where to start with early 4000 hydro issue

well i came home with a tractor the other day.
for the most part it is a 62 4000 industrial, light duty, power steering, 3 point hitch, pto, loader, etc. the thing runs great, but leaves some to be desired in other departments.

i am handy, worked on cars all my life (within reason) but the extent of my hydraulic experience is just with brakes.

where should i start?

what i do know is that it has fluid, and it appears the pump is primed, i pulled the plug off the top of the nose of the pump and when i turn the tractor over i get a little squirt. has fine bubbles in it there, but not at the dipstick.

when actuated the hitch levers twitch, though it is hardly noticeable, and i mean hardly.

where should i put a gauge to check PSI and make sure pump output is good?

i assume the pump is shared with the power steering, which works well.

what are the simple things to go for? the fellow i got it from was convinced, or trying to convince me it was just the relief valve.
is the hydro system on this the same as the 65+ i found an online manual for those, though the scans are poor...
thankyou, any help is appreciated.
sorry for what is probably a novice question...

nless some custom work has been done.. ps pump should be on upper front right side of engine.. hyds pump for lift is lower right back of engine.

I agree with bern.. if you have flow but no lift. think unloader first.. and move on from there. there are of course other possibilities. if it is a stuck unloader.. you have no way to test pressure yet, as it is dumping to sump.

No, the 4 cylinder 4000 hydraulic system is the same as the earlier hundred and '01 series. It is not like the later 65+ 3 cylinder thousand series.

thanks, you are correct, the PS pump is up off the lefthand front of the engine.

i guess i will chase down the unloader valve first. take care.
