good enought to get some paint down today.

got hood painted, fenders, grill panel but not egg crate
got both front rims done, and had just got the rears off when the weather channel predicted rain in a few hours, so i cut it all off there.

I was also down to my last dregs of paint in the can, so on the way to work i picked up another can for the rears.

got the front end primed earlier today as well.

used grey majic primer on the tin, and rustoleum brown primer on the cast.. looks decent.

tin is beater tin so I didn't try to fill bolt holes and dimples. i just sanded out and ground out rust, etc... heck. it ain't even the correct tin either.. or at least it's mix n match. tin for sure came off an SOS model. and this think don't show any signs of having been sos, unless the engine had been on an sos, and then they got another rc rear and any old 01 4 spd tranny.

Since the tin is so poor, i opted to blow it all grey, no red stripe down the center. had it been better tin i would have.

need to finish the rims and then i will be down to cast and things like the seat.. etc.

had to beat one of the rims off the hub it was rusted so bad. sledge and board and busted knuckles... blood sacrafice right?

ps.. on another note. Majic paint has apparrently gotten better.

i tried it when tsc picked it up after valspar was dropped. I hated it then.

I used it's metal primer, and paint and reducer and hardner. paint goes down pretty good.

Only thing is I think it's reducer should be faster.. and it's hardner is still slow like valspar hardner was.

i like nason hardner better. quik-cure. I love that stuff. I'll be using it for the rest of the project.

I may also experement with some naptha as a reducer for a faster flash. It is also mineral spirits capable fro mixing.. but I don't use that except for cast..

I think you're going to finish before I do.
I'm using Valspar paint on this one that I bought when it was on
clearance at TSC when they dropped it. Thinning it with Naptha.
I get more overspray in the air with Naptha than with Mineral
Spirits, but it does flash much faster than MS. I haven't used
the Majic reducer yet, but I did buy a can of it to try.

These are a few of the little pieces I painted Wednesday.

i havn't looke dup the magic reducer chemical number yet. but to me.. it 'feels' like a mix of mineral spirits and naptha.

it's not as fast a flash as naptha.. but not as slow as mineral spirits. nor does it overspray as bad as naptha.

Personally i like faster flash.

next batch I mix i will add in some naptha as part of the reducer.

I'm also gonna mix a test batch and see if the nason hardner is compatible.

hey. they white panels look ver similar.. except yours have no dents or patch work fixing SOS scars. :)

They weren't too bad to start with dent and hole wise.
They had some rust challenges though.
This is the only picture I have handy of the dash "before".
I was actually taking a picture of the oil pressure.

Hood and doglegs were fair, fenders worse.

that's nuttin.. just surface rust. that buffs right off. then a few coats of hi build primer and sanding and you have beautiful tin!

min looked like it had gone thru 2 big hail storms!

fenders wer crumpled. I beat them out.

she's no parade queen. :) I just want to prevent further rust damage..e tc.

"just surface rust. that buffs right off."

That's what I thought when I first looked at it! LOL
Turned out there were four coats of paint on that hood.
Rust between every coat. Ended up taking it down to bare metal.
Still had pits about a 16th of an inch deep in the metal.
This is the same one I did that braze job on the dogleg holes.

This one won't be a trailer queen either, but if I painted over
that rust it would be back in short order, so I took it all off.
To me its better than doing it twice.
Seems like it takes me forever though. :-/

getting rid of the rust is the only way to go.

on tin. if you leave rust.. it comes back...

I sanded and buffed all my rust out, but declined trying to fix the 35 million dimples and dents.

I remember doing a tractor that had house paint on it. I almost used a belt sander to take the stuff off!

Question: How much Naptha are you using with the (former) TSC Valspar paint? I'm using the same stuff.....bought it on the TSC blowout sale.....and am about to break it out again tomorrow.

Thanks,
Kevin

I wish I could give you an exact measurement, but it seems that
some of the cans of paint are thicker than others, so it varies.
I normally mix just what I'm going to use at the time, say 20 ounces.
I add about an ounce of hardner and an ounce of Naptha then
test it on a scrap piece of sheet metal I keep around for that.
Too thick add a little more, too thin add a little paint.
Probably not too helpful, but its a look and feel thing to me with this paint.

I have worked a WHOLE week on a hood... When I put it on the tractor it did not run any better... I am the only one it impressed :(....

No problem, I get what you are saying, though. Gonna try tomorrow.

Good looking women are not necessarily better cooks either.
But they get more free drinks at the bar! LOL ;)

you just have to find out what your paint gun likes. once you do it enough. you will get a feel for the viscosity when mixing it,

Shot some parts today, mixed in some Naptha with the TSC Valspar stuff. Got a real good feel for the viscocity I need, and man, did it lay down nice.

I think might get some pics taken next week. Old thing has come a LONG way.

Thanks!

Glad to hear it worked out well!
Love to see the pictures.

if the tin is intact i don't mind putting some time into it. getting gown to metal and all.. filling dimples after beating them out.. etc. but some of them are just workers and have had dates with tree limbs.. :) I just get rid of the rust, then seal em...

Soundguy,
I'm like you. Don't mind putting a coat of lipstick on the girl, even if later she is going to roll in the mud like a pig.
