Coild someone give me input on the select-o-speeds from the 65-75 era. I know to stay away from earlier ones. But are these basically the same tranny or have improvements been made. thanks,John

They are a newer, improved version. Would actually be the third version. If they've had reasonable maintenance, they shouldn't be any trouble. Just try it out before you buy - drive it long enough to get the oil warmed up and try all gears. The 5000 had the heaviest version, and I think they all had a filter that could be replaced without opening them up.

I have a '73 S-O-S 4000 and I love it. I got it about 7 years ago and the previous owner hadn't done much with it for the 15 years that he owned it, but luckily he only put 10 to 20 hours a year on it and I went through everything and cleaned the screen and replaced the filter and fluid and adjusted the bands and it's been working fine. I only put about 20 hours a year on it myself, but I change the engine oil and filter every year and service the transmission every other year, and it has always served me well.

Any of the "early ones" that you "know to stay away from" that are still out there and working properly have been in use years longer than mine and if there were any problems inherent with them they would have failed long ago. The earliest ORC transmissions had a couple of recalls, and then when they came out with the DDC version in the early 60's they offered a replacement program so most of the 4 cylinder S-O-S tractors that are still out there running should be fine as long as they are maintained properly.
