thermostart ignorance

I am digging into my new/old 1980 3600 and have looked everywhere in the repair manual/old posts on just how the thermostart opens to let diesel into/onto the element, but I can't find anything.
does it have some sort of valve that opens when the heat reaches a certain temp?

thanks, david

Supposedly,
There is a bimetal spring that when heated by that coil it opens and allows fuel to trickle over the red hot coil and into the manifold.

UD has it correct. They can also fail 2 ways. Open-Fuel trickles into the intake all the time or they can fail closed and not let any fuel in when needed.Pull the intake hose off and hold the key in heat position and you can see if it works. Sometimes you can actually see a little fire.

pull it off and look in the fuel side and you will see a ball bearing as the seal.. you can push against it and loosen it up a bit by poking it a time or two with a blunt object. I freed up one that way.... they are not terrible expensive, but I would poke it first, and then replace if no go.

It's a fact. Yes you can look in and see it work......little blobs of burning diesel that get sucked into the cylinders. Works great.
