Resistor voltage on an 8n

What voltage should i have at the coil? I put a new Resistor and it has 6 volts.

I am going to guess that we are talking about a 'front mount' distributor. If the tractor has a six volt system. the voltage at the top of the coil will be 6 volts with the points open and about 1/2 that with the points closed.

So, if i put a volt meter on the coil wire and start it, it should read 4 volts?

I would turn it over by hand. However, if you attach a 6 volt test light to the top of the coil it should blink on and off as the points open and close.

yep.. points closed, will read less than 6v. 4ish probably, depends on coil and resistor and how the chinese guy felt that morning.

if you put a test lamp inline with wire to coil and roll engine over it will blink.. that will tell you you have power and points are opening and closing as has been said.
