Ford 861 Remote Hydraulic

1959 Ford 861 gasoline engine - curious best/least cost method to set up one remote hydraulic to run a three point wood splitter. Cylinder capacity, least cost part supplier, etc. if anyone has had experience completing this task. I have the three point attachment but not.the remote or cylinder. Thanks.

The low volume pump on your tractor will result in VERY slow cycling of a wood splitter. You will not be satisfied with the response time.

A properly sized PTO driven pump is a much better option if you insist upon powering your splitter from your tractor.

Excellent point Ultradog and agree and sort of came to that conclusion last night as read some similar dialogs. Thanks for your reply.

Just to give another view point. We have a vertical splitter ( 3 point hitch) with a 4inch/30 inch stroke cylinder and a pto gear pump. Any tractor we have it on just runs slightly above idle to get the job done. Usually a Farmall SuperMD or an Oliver 1250 gasser. Your 861 would do the same, but it needs to have the vertical exhaust, not the one that runs under the tractor, for obvious reasons. Have not checked fuel usage though, diesel for sure does not burn much at fast idle.

I just don't like to work close to a small engine running 3600 rpm and the exhaust is just 'right there'. Noise and fumes. Hondas do run smoother and quieter in my opinion though. We like the upright splitter much better that a horizontal also.

My 2 cents- Garry
