Is the choke plate closing all of the way? Those updraft systems need a lot of choke to generate the suction necessary to pull the fuel up into the manifold and on into the cylinders.

the choke plate and the carb all seem to be fine. we took a carb off an old massey harris that had been sitting for a decade and it would half way run with it with full choking and a pumping of the throttle. hate to buy a new carb since this one seems ok and ran before the new manifold was installed. i don't what else to try?

glad to see that this has everyone else shaking their heads too !!.....the carb is a best I remember the number is a 769 not sure about the letters.(old timers here) seems to be what is called for from the research I've done. after a rebuild and taking it apart and blowing though every you think he should try a new carb? at min a $250 investment that might not work? is port 2 and 5 the intake ports on the head? don't know how it could be the wrong manifold.

Don't buy a new carb. The old M/S carbs are better and can be rebuilt with a kit. TSX769 is what my 800 had (recently sold).
A suggestion: hold your hand over the air intake of the carb when you turn it over. If choking by had won't pull enough fuel to get your hand damp with gasoline, you are not likely getting enough fuel.
...and be careful swapping carbs. Some have a slightly different hole spacing at the manifold and if so you can crack the carb or manifold when you tighten it down. OK to swap like sizes, just don't force it if it doesn't want to mount up easily.
