ford 800 won't start

my dad bought an 800. it ran and over the winter painted the tractor, replaced a broken manifold, new points, condenser, button, wires and plugs. now the tractor will only hit for a second. he then rebuilt the carb with the same results. I went for a visit and thought I could solve the problem. if I spray fuel directly into the carb it will run. I took the new intake off and checked the head for damage thinking it wasn"t getting vacuum enough to suck up the fuel. my dad said it had two gaskets on it when he took the old one off. the number 5 port (rear intake hole) was raised and not flat. maybe the reason for the double gaskets? any help would be great, as I have had to return home from the visit.

While cranking, spray an alcohol based parts cleaner around the manifold, especially at the suspect area. If it picks up and runs, you've found your problem. If it doesn't, suspect carb or fuel flow issues.

From what you describe, it does sound like some serious planing might need to be done on the intake and exhaust ports on the head, though!

no....it is only raised at bolt hole area....and is only enough to show slightly with a straight edge. dad is getting two new gaskets and going to try that. I suggested we try the old broken manifold but he has already trashed it. I can put my hand over the breather intake on carb and get suction on cranking. this tractor is stumping everyone?

we sprayed starter fluid all around the manifold with no hits or fires. my dad is 84 and a farmer. we have worked on tons of tractors, farm equip...etc when he gets the double gaskets put on I will post if that fixes it. I have had the carb apart several times and think all is clear and floats are right. each time there is gas in the bowl and unhooking the fuel line sends out a steady flow. we even put air pressure into tank while trying to start...still can't get it to pickup the fuel?

Is the choke plate closing all of the way? Those updraft systems need a lot of choke to generate the suction necessary to pull the fuel up into the manifold and on into the cylinders.

the choke plate and the carb all seem to be fine. we took a carb off an old massey harris that had been sitting for a decade and it would half way run with it with full choking and a pumping of the throttle. hate to buy a new carb since this one seems ok and ran before the new manifold was installed. i don't what else to try?

Whoa! Is this carb identical to the one that should be on the Ford! If not, that could be ur problem.

glad to see that this has everyone else shaking their heads too !!.....the carb is a tsx769...as best I remember the number is a 769 not sure about the letters.(old timers here)....it seems to be what is called for from the research I've done. after a rebuild and taking it apart and blowing though every port....do you think he should try a new carb? at min a $250 investment that might not work? is port 2 and 5 the intake ports on the head? don't know how it could be the wrong manifold.

it has a newer switch. getting power and spark. it will run poorly by injecting fuel though air/choke intake. so don't think its an electrical problem?

Don't buy a new carb. The old M/S carbs are better and can be rebuilt with a kit. TSX769 is what my 800 had (recently sold).

A suggestion: hold your hand over the air intake of the carb when you turn it over. If choking by had won't pull enough fuel to get your hand damp with gasoline, you are not likely getting enough fuel.

...and be careful swapping carbs. Some have a slightly different hole spacing at the manifold and if so you can crack the carb or manifold when you tighten it down. OK to swap like sizes, just don't force it if it doesn't want to mount up easily.
