Are the sleeves suppose to be at the height of the deck or above or below? Im putting head gasket on and they are all probably .030 below deck height. Could this be why im getting coolant in oil? Gasket looked good.

Since noone else has responded I'll take a guess. You don't want the sleeves low because they will then move up and down with the piston. You don't want them high or they will prevent the head gasket from sealing on the block. Flush would obviously be best with an allowance of maybe + or - .005" high or low. My best guess is that .030" low is too much and could cause your problem.

They are supposed to be a little bit high, I think .020. Someone will come in with the exact measurement

Sleeves on ANY engine should be zero to 0.002 above deck height
in order to accomplish good sealing with the gasket.......

Anything lower than deck height is simply wrong.

A good machine shop reboring and sleeving will kiss the deck
after install to level everything off.

Your sleeves were either installed low, or they slipped down
(not common for all to slip down equally)

I put new sleeves in a 134, they were flush with deck. Block had counter bore to match step on top of sleeve. I presume 172 would be the same.

Just rebuilt my 134, and they are flush with the deck. Shop pressed in and then took a skim pass off to true everything up. Then chamfered the top of the bore.
