I didn't get much done on it this weekend.
Sorry.
I did get the axle out from under it and into the pickup to get sandblasted.
This front end is in pretty good shape. All the tie rod ends look nearly new. Rubber boots all there and good.
That part # is a standard front bushing used on a bunch of different Ford tractors.
Got one dry end on one spindle - wore the bushing good but not into the housing. - The rest of them are good. You can which end in the picture. Pin is very hard so okay - ream to fit. I'll get by with one bushing.
Will inspect the center bushing in the axle when it comes back from the sandblaster.
Thrust bearings are only $20 ea but these are fine with a clean and regrease.
I took the cylinder apart too. It all looks good.
A couple questions for Bern:
Should I just replace the metal piston ring as a matter of course? No scoring in the bore - nor on the shaft. The whole unit worked fine.
Havent looked at the actuating spool yet.
Do you have any suggestions about renewing seals, etc in there?
That front seal on these cylinders are kind of goofy. No snap ring, etc.
What do you do, glue them in?
I didn't take it out yet either.

The spindle parts avaible on this site. The steer cyl has oring for seal. The wiper is hard plastic like the ones used on A/P steer cyls. The spool for control valve screws apart. Good hyd seal place can provide all the parts. The NH kit has way more pieces than needed.

For what NH gets for parts, I wouldn't replace the piston ring if it's in good shape and it was steering fine. I would however replace every rubber seal in that assembly if it were me. You're there now, and you'll kick yourself later if it leaks again a month from now. I would definitely do the spool seals as well - use the parts breakdown to help you ID all of the seals inside.

The seals in the end cap are basically dug out with a small pick or screwdriver. The news seals are installed by slightly collapsing/deforming them and shoving them in the groove. Many hydraulic cylinders are made this way.

Shuan, Bern, Thanks.
I ordered all the seals and that bushing today.
Looks like it will be a few days to a week before the dealer can get them all in hand and ship them to me.
Meanwhile I'll get everything cleaned up and painted. Sandblaster said the axle will be done Thursday or Friday.

What was condition of the kingpin eyes in the ends of the axle?
I'm prepping to do a rebuild on front axle of a 4500, previous owner gave me two complete kingpin and bushing kits.
My axle eyes are slightly egg shaped and allow the kingpins to move about 1/8", measured at upper end, when grabbing the wheel at top and bottom and rocking in and out. I'm planning to heat the axle eyes and insert an old kingpin as a mandrel and hammer the eyes smaller and rounder, and then knock out the old pin. When cool, ream/fit a new kingpin to the bore. then do the bushings.
Does anyone have experience with repairing worn axle eyes on the 4400 or 4500?
Thanks.
