1600 pto engages and disengages without clutch

The pto on my 1600 engages and disengages without depressing the clutch. I have not tried it with an implement yet but it easily goes in and out without depressing the clutch. I imagine this is not correct as I foresee it disengaging easily when in use. Is there a clutch adjustment or missing spring that keeps it engaged?

Thanks

with no load on them, and just the lil short pto stub, i imagine MOST engage and disengage just fine 'on the go'.

not much inertia to spin up a lil shaft.

kick a mower on there and you'd be grinding without the clutch.

Thanks for the reply. That makes sense. I just found it strange and wanted to check before giving it a full on go. I'm gonna try bush hogging with it tomorrow. This is all very new to me so my sense of something wrong is heightened;). Thanks again

as long as it stays engaged while mowing, and doesn't kick out.. you are likely fine.

post back if you hit any snags

I don't know the workings of that model.
If the tractor has independent pto then slipping the pto in without using the clutch would be normal.

(quoted from post at 15:39:36 07/26/14) A 1600 is a single clutch disc unit without ORC built in drive line.

So I need to add an ORC? Your post says without. I thought it had one built in.

We'll I hit a snag. Even with the rotary mower on it disengages. The clutch is required for engaging but around corners or in deep brush it will disengage. It takes very little pressure to keep it engaged. A bungee cord or light hand pressure is enough and it works without problem. That's not ideal but if the only way to fix it is to split it I'll stick with the bungee. Hoping there is an adjustment or more easily accessible fix. There is very little play on the pto shaft and no leaks of any sort
