Ford 8n positive or neg ground

Sorry to ask a question that there has been a lot of chatter on
but I am stuck.

Ford 8n tractor showed up, wired for 12 volts I am told BUT no
battery installed. Bought a new napa battery and was
installing it for neg ground (my assumption), BUT noticed that
the cable from the starter motor to the battery terminal
connected is black. Hmmm. Could it be a positive ground 12
volt system?

I am a novice mechanic. I don"t want to screw up anything.

Thanks for any advice,
TJ

I think all the battery cables on all my tractors (and combine, swather, and windrower) are black. Does it have an alternator? Almost all of them are negative ground.

That tractor originally had a 6 volt positive ground system with a generator. If the 12 volt conversion was done using an alternator, then it is likely a negative ground system and hooking up the battery with positive ground would be a bad thing. If it was converted using a 12 volt generator with an external voltage regulator, then you can hook the battery up as either positive or negative ground, and then you should polarize the generator so that it will charge the battery.

It was done with an alternator. I will hook it up as neg ground and go from there. Thank you both for your replies.

Just so you know 99% of alternators are - ground and if you where to hook one up + ground you would let the smoke out of it the moment you hooked it up. And when I say let the smoke out I do mean if will in fact start smoking the moment you hooked it up
