what's the difference in 80-90w Gear lube?

Well-known Member
Motorcycle dealer wants $8.99
Valoline $6.49
and Wal-mart brand $4.19/qt.
All are 80-90w GL4 and GL5 anti slip differental
lube. So what's the difference, besides the
obvious, price?

Who makes the oil sold at dealer with a Kawasaki
name on it? Who makes the Wal-mart brand, which is
next to the Valoline?

walmart oil used to be made by warren unilube. I haven't checked lately.. but likely still is. Many house brands are. same with many dealer brands. IE.. custom labeling and botteling.

If it meets the specs.. you should be good to go.

I always buy napa brand oil, the old man who owned showed me right on the label of vavoline and nappa qts that they were made at the same place, as for walmart oil who knows, i would guess what oil company is based in china, but if i was buying i would just bite the bulet and buy the vavoline
 
certaintly ain't china.. and it's too easy to check vs just guessing and saying china.

The MSDS is MANDATORY public info, and tells all.

in the old days.. the differences were.. if you had shiny gold/brass or not...

if you had syncronizers (shiny brass) , you could NOT use some additives as they would cause the syncs to corrode...

so that was the first decision..


second was the rear end.. did you need special additives to make the rear end lock and unlock.. or did you need to avoid the super slick stuff that prevented it from locking, and now days,, do you need the synthetic blend for the newer ones???
