Ford 4600 oil pan replacement.

I need to replace the oil pan on my 4600 due to a leak and dents from brushhogging some trees. I currently have the stamped steel pan, but I see that a Cast Iron oil pan is also available as an aftermarket replacement. Which is better for an aftermarket pan? The stamped steel is certainly cheaper. I did have a concern that the cast iron might crack easier from an impact, where the stamped pan would "give" a little. Any thoughts on which pan is best?
 
I don't believe the CI pan will fit your 4600.
Not without some modification anyway.
It has an additional cast area on the front of it to allow the pan to be bolted to the bolster to give the tractor more rigidity.
That extra area would interfere with bolting it up to your 4600 front end.
We have looked at doing it before and it could be done if you removed some of the cast iron with a milling machine and then countersunk the front bolt holes where the pan bolts to the timing cover and then use flat head screws.
Once installed I think you could drop the tractor off a cliff and not hurt the CI pan at all.
They are pretty stout - weigh about 80 lbs.

The cast iron is the second one. The CI one appear to be sparex. As shown here:

I, too have looked at putting a cast pan on an all-purpose 3 cylinder Ford. Won't fit as UD says. Buy the steel pan.
 
go with the steel
take a cue from the off-road crew.
If that is your tractors regular duty, make up a skid plate.
I've had a few old tractors that had them. Some, just a simple
piece of angled steel attached in front of the pan.(looked factory?)
Some had homebrew extreme creations :)
 
I have mentioned this before but when I switched engines in my 3000 and put a diesel in it I also put those funky little LCG spindles on it.
Looking things over I realized that switching to the light front bolster that they used on the very early 3000s and the 2000s till 1968 or 69 would allow me to use a cast iron pan.
Having seen more than one tractor with a bashed in oil pan I figured using the CI pan I had laying around would be cheap insurance.
It adds a few lbs to the front end too which never hurts either.
No mods required. It all just bolted on.

I haven't been tempted to own anything with an SU style front axle. I was referring to too much interference with the utility/industrial cast pan and all purpose bolster.
