Steering problems

I have a 1958 Ford 601 with manual steering, and I need the following parts to fix it: 1 inner section seal, top steering bearing and race, top seal, and the gasket between the steering gear box and column. I can order some of these parts from here, but I'd like to go ahead and get started with my repairs. There are no tractor dealers at all within 50 miles, and the closest NH dealer is about an hour and a half away.

Is there any chance of getting the seals and bearings from Napa/Autozone, etc...? If so, does anyone know, or know how to find the parts numbers?

Thanks.

A 601 without power steering? Correct? " 1 inner section seal" ?????only seals in this box are, two on either side on the sector shaft. "top bearing and race" are at the bottom of the tube and mid-way on the shaft. "top seal" are you referring to the top bearing in the tube under the steering wheel?. "gasket between the steering box and the column" Those are shims to adjust the column bearing clearance

You are correct. I got a kit for one sector with the sector seal and gaskets, but it only came with one seal, and both are bad. Top bearing is the one you mentioned. As to the shim, is it normal for oil to seep from these if the gearbox is filled completely? If not, I need one.

When you get the new bearing and race on the steering shaft, you will have to determine how many and what size shims it will take to get the proper adjustment on the steering shaft bearings.. Most people now days us Type 0 (JD corn head grease) for lubrication, which is some what heaver than the previously recommender EP 90 lube. Thus you will have little or no problem with lube leakage.

ditto what has been sid.

i use 0 or 00 ep lube sin my boxes i rebuild.

if you are worried about a leak.. clean all the shims and both flanges in naptha or acetone.. something that flashes dry. then select all shims needed. then use thin rit smear on them and then stack them and bolt up, wipe excess. no pressire in that box.. so the rtv between the shims should extrude out excess.

just use a smear... and a thin one.. not a peanut butter sandwich smear.. and not a line or bead like caulking a window.... less is better..
