Engine identification

Is there anyway to tell a 3000 from 4000 3cyl. engine. I have a 4500 and the engine was replaced prior. It has a fuel smoke at idle or any rpm. I thought it could be a smaller ci engine running on the larger 201ci injector pump.

On the right side of the block there should be a raised casting number, something like C5NN6015xx where the xx at the end is 1 or two letters. Post the full number with the trailing letters and someone here should be able to tell you what it is, or do a Google search on the full number and you can usually tell what it is by the listings for salvage yards selling the blocks, which will usually say what model tractor it came out of.

There is a series of stamped numbers on the oil pan rail, usually on the right side that will ID the engine. Should be a model and serial number I think... There will be a letter code that ID's what series tractor the engine is for. Get the numbers and I or someone else can look them up...
That said... I doubt the pump is the problem. If it's smoking at idle it's more likely got an air intake issue, timing is off, injectors are bad (poor pattern) or you have low compression... Regardless of what pump is installed... it's only going to deliver as much fuel as is needed to maintain that idle speed.
