1955 850 fuel problems

I just bought an 850 from a friend of mine. He's had it for about 5 years with no issues but it stopped running about six months ago. Because he has several other tractors and i had asked if he would sell one he decided to not mess with it and I got it. It turned out to be a bad key switch but it wasn't getting fuel past the sediment bowl. I pulled it off and found it full of grey goop that looked like anti seize compound. I cleaned it out and it fired up but as I have ran it this past week I can see tiny amounts of it building up in the bowl again. Any ideas what it is?

Does it have rubber fuel line? If so, it might be the wrong kind of rubber hose, like vacuum line, that is dissolving on the inside from being in contact with the gasoline.

If it still has metal fuel line, then I would guess that something got into the fuel tank and the tank needs to be flushed.

sean brings up a good idea. check hoses. also look to see if the tank has maybee been lined. some old liners may not like the new ethanol gas

It has a metal line and when i drained the tank i could see a little of it in the bottom. Could it be a lead substitute that has settled out? And do i need lead substitute?

I would clean the tank, especially if you already have it drained.
You do not need lead substitute, but if you can get it ethanol free
gas would be good. I can't get it easily, so I run regular in mine.
Hasn't been a problem in any of my tractors.

could be old tank liner compound, could be old additives.
Ya never really know. Looking-smelling old gas tanks....what IS that? lol

Pro clean it, shake some nuts and bolts around in it, whatever.
To get back in the game, I've removed them and just hosed them out with a high pressure nozzle on a garden hose. dry em out and it is better than it was...
(When you have the tank off, whack the bottom with your knuckles or a hammer to check for rust-thru. An old tank liner might have been an attempted fix)

When you get it clean, no, you don't need any additives.
They'll run on pretty much anything that will burn as long as it's clean
