961D Engine Photos

I dropped the oil pan yesterday and took the following photos. The crankshaft is broken at nos. 1 & 2. The rod the bent on no. 2. It also appears that the crank hit the oil pump, breaking the assembly just below where it is mounted to the block.

Ouch! Well, at least you know what happened, and have an idea what parts you'll need.
Thanks for the pics and keeping us posted.

Have you figured out what you are going to do? Rebuild what you have if the block is still good or try to find another engine?

Rick

Looks to be a torsional vibration/fatique failure.

I would not reuse the block without thorough magnaflux inspection.

Would likely be much more cost effective to look for another engine.

(quoted from post at 09:02:38 07/17/14) dang.

remind us again what was going on when that all let go?

From his original post:

Tractor started up very easily. I hooked up the plow, made the adjustments to the PA rims, and headed over to the field I was planning on turning over. While closing a gate to keep the beeves in, the engine made a banging sound and abruptly stopped.

This happened at a low idle, thankfully, and not at a high RPM while plowing.

I have to say not much, but someone with more experience would probably have caught the problem before it reached this stage. I just don't know if it knocked more than it should have...

Failure occurred during engine idle.

Thanks for the lead! Much appreciated. I think I have a working engine available to me locally, but I will keep their info on hand.

Thanks, Royse! I was actually hoping this wasn't too bad compared to other possibilities...seems like that's not the case, though. Oh well. Depending on what my mechanic wants to do after we split the tractor, we might dig into it a little deeper. I've shown him the photos by Facebook, but haven't yet had a chance to visit with him about them.

I don't really know yet, Rick. I guess we'll dig in a little further to try to make a decision from what we find. I don't have the experience or knowledge to assess the damage that I've photographed here.

Thanks again for the help. I probably won't have much more news until after harvest or even deer hunting season. But I will definitely post again once we get started.

Colin

Thanks! Do you have any experience with their parts? I've never purchased from Agkits. I also see that this site sells one. Any thoughts on that? I've always been satisfied with YT's other parts.

Colin

none what so ever. Just found it and thought you might could use it. Every one has an idea as what they would do. I think I would pull the engine check for damage and if none was there more than I can see. I would install the crank and get going. The balancer needs to be timed per the book. Every thing looks pretty clean to me from the photos you posted.
