4 Cyl 4000 Oil Change - Couple pictures, Couple Questions

Went to change the oil on the 4000 today and knew it wouldn't be a normal oil change. Had to use a 3/4" drive breaker bar with a 28" cheater and 1 5/16" 6 point socket to break the drain plug loose! Ok, I blew that off as someone showing their muscle or just trying to stop a drip. But then....after I bent my filter wrench trying to get the filter off, someone was just being too over zealous about tightening things. Had to break out the mega channel locks. Also saw they painted the oil return galley. Have to clean all that paint off. Here's the questions. Is that screen in the pan normal or should I pull the pan? My 861 had the circular screen on the plug. Couldn't find anything like this type in the shop manual or FO-20. Also, why would someone go thru the trouble of welding a bolt head on the drain plug? Looks like a normal old 172 pan plug and I could use the spare one off my 861 and get rid of the rounded off welded one.

I will give you my $.02 for what it is worth. First you and I and all other Ford owners have been on notice from SouNdguy for about a year that we need to keep spare drain plug gaskets on hand so that we can renew them at each oil change so that they don't have to be over tightened. Now don't you feel like an idiot? Second the bolt head was welded on as a courtesy to the next owner instead of leaving him with something that could be removed only with a chisel. Third that screen looks bogus to me. probably a band-aid after ruining the original like the one on your 861. The filter was put on by someone who was too intelligent for the tightening instructions on the filter. The paint? more paint, more better!
 
The base plug sticking is not just from being overtightened. The gasket bonds to the plug and the base. Put a thin coat of never-seize on both sides of the gasket and it will save you a lot of aggravation.

I am laughing at this one! I just changed the oil on my 64 4000 Saturday. Had to get the 18" pipe wrench and the jack to hold it tight up on the plug! I had to go to the CNH dealer to get a new water pump and picked up a gasket p/n Tisco 8N6734 cost $0.74.
I never realized that there was a gasket until the posts you mentioned. The gasket was probably gone when I was first starting out with this tractor. I had brought a cereal box up to cut a gasket out of, but since I was there, I spent the big bucks for a store bought one. LOL
The screen is definitely not correct. Should be a cylinder screen attached to the plug.
As far as the filter, I feel that if the oil has not been changed lately and the engine has gotten a little too warm, that the filter will want to stay in place. I remember when I first changed the oil back in the 70's on mine, (Dad was not the most diligent mechanic) I had a "heLLLLLL" of a time getting that thing off. I stuck screwdrivers thru it and almost completely cut it apart before it came off. Then being a young teen, I did not realize that the gasket was still firmly attached to the block. I put the new filter on and when I fired it up, the oil flew. I figured it out and have never had that problem again.

Never did understand that screen being there at all. I'll bet no one has ever dropped the plug an inch and a half and held it there while the oil drained so nothing could fall in to the drain pan.
 
That screen is not original. Buy a replacement plug before your next oil change; it comes with the correct cylindrical screen. Depending on how will that screen is attached to the pickup, you may just need to leave it be. I wouldn't drop the pan just to remove it.
 
as has been said. that bolt head was welded on becuase the oe head had likely worn off.. Also as mentioned ( maybee I preach it too much? ) some people will, instead of putting on a new free gasket they can cut out of thick paper or thin cardboard, they will instead glue the plug in with something that sets up like concrete like weather stripping cement... or use no gasket at all and tighten the plug with a 4' cheater.. that usually makes the next owner round the plug off and have to weld a bolt head or nut to it to get it off.
