Hydraulics on 1953 Ford Jubilee

1953 Ford Jubilee has a brush hog on back. It won"t
lift when the tractor first starts. After idling for
5 or 10 minutes it will lift but pulsates. Any idea
what might cause this?

Hud pump maybe loosing it prime and out the fluid level maybe low or full of water

deffinately check fluid level just because you should know if it is full and what color it is.

assuming full, and it won't lift.. instead of letting the pump wear ot with no oil while it self primes.. pull the front top plug on the pump, if it is a piston pump.. when oil bubbles there, see if it will lift immediately, after putting plug in.

I agree with Old, those are classic signs of loosing the prime in the pump. Even if you get it to prime well, it will probably loose that prime overnight.

Which pump do you have. The Jube came with a square vane pump, but many where changed over to the round piston pump. Parts are no longer available for the vane pump. However piston pumps can be rebuilt.

The loss of prime is do to a suction side air leak that lets the oil drain back into the sump. Once there is only air on the suction side, the pump has a difficult time drawing oil up from the sump so it can pump. Even when it does, it also draws in air and that is what causes the pulsating lift. The fix on the piston pump is to replace the wobble shaft and seal. That requires new bearings.
