8000 PTO Clutch Seal

Rebuilding a PTO clutch on a neighbor's 8000. I'm having a hard time installing the main piston into the clutch hub. The external square-cut seal doesn't have any lead in and since it is down inside the hub it is hard to see what is happening. I had to tap the piston home, or also tried using an arbor press. I already nicked the new seal and need to pick up another now. Is there a trick I should know about?

The manual just says "Install new O-rings on the piston, then position the PTO clutch piston in the clutch housing" Your use of the words "square cut seal" makes it sound like you have something other than O-rings.

You are supposed to use a press to install the lock ring after installing the wave washer and all the plates, but that is after putting the piston in.

It's certainly a square lathe-cut seal, as was the old one that came out (in pieces). The center seal is an o-ring though. I made a tool out of a piece of 3" PVC pipe to use in the press to compress the spring, but that spring only pushes the piston back - the clutch plates go in later.
I'll give the Vaseline a try and make extra sure I get it in as straight as possible. I had been using 134 oil but it just wasn't working. Thanks for the advice.
