Ford 4000 3 cyl diesel fuel filter question?

I'm going to get a new one tomorrow.
I think I recall seeing a thread where one of you experts suggested a certain type of fuel filter? Maybe it was longer for water collection?

The standard filter incorporates a bowl that is re-used and provides water separator capability. There are tens of thousands of Fords running around with the original style single, short CAV style filter and performing just fine. There really is no need to overthink fuel filters unless you have especially poor fuel supply, storage methods, or bad fuel transport habits.

Is there a way to inspect a used filter ?

Not really. If it's used it's either still in service or headed for the trash. Not many folks would think that filter is expensive enough to worry about. If there's any question, toss it.
