Ford 4000 PTO slip?

So I've been looking around trying to find posts similar to my problem and haven't had any luck. Hopefully somebody can help me out. I have a 66' 4000 diesel with SOS. I purchased a unicorn log splitter that goes on the pto from a neighbor for $100 and decided to give it a try, I found that most logs would actually cause the pto to stop turning completely and the engine would just keep running along as if it had a minor load on it. I've read stories of people that say large logs will actually stall out and kill the tractor but mine the pto just stops spinning under a load. What's the deal here? Is there a clutch slipping somewhere? And how do I fix it? Thanks in advance!
