I was running a 7' rotary cutter with my 4630 Ford and my PTO stopped suddenly. My 3 pt hitch is also stopped working. The oil level in the rear end is good and the hyd. filter was changed earlier in the spring. Any ideas where to start looking? I looked in the archives but didn't find anything that helped. Thanks

Might have broken the driveshaft that goes through
the trans and drives the rear hyd pump and PTO.

I changed the filter again to start with the simple stuff but it didn't help. The oil is a little milky. I'll have to wait until Monday to check into it more. Thanks

I believe that has an independent pto so the clutch pack is hydraulically actuated. If you have no hydraulic pressure than the pto won"t turn. Since the 3 pt doesn"t work, you may have failed the hydraulic pump or have a blown seal somewhere in the lift system. I suspect a problem in the hydraulic system. If it has remotes, do they work?

...and the pump is driven by the shaft that Rick is talking about.. I'd have put my wager on the input shaft at the flywheel, but it's a crap shoot really. Doubt it's the pump.

I don't have any pressure at the remotes either. Does the tractor have to be split to get to the input shaft or can it be seen when you take off the pump?

Most definitely has to be split. Personally... on that thing I'd probably start at the clutch housing and see what you get into. You may get 'lucky' and find the problem in there. If so unbolting the front flange from the transmission will access the PTO input shaft. If the internal shaft that Rick is talking about is broken... that will require complete removal of the transmission from the chassis, and IIRC, removal of the complete front cover assembly from the transmission... then pull the shaft out the back. It's not a small job. Just splitting those tractors more or less requires the removal of the steering pedestal. I hope you don't have a cab on it. If you do... just drive it off a cliff right now.

Thanks, that job sounds over my pay grade. I don't have a cab but I think I'll just bite the bullet and take it to town. Thanks.
