Greetings.

I've learned many helpful things about my 8N from this message board, so thank you all!

I looked at a 650 for sale a few days ago, and I have a question or two. First the transmission. The machine shifted easily into every forward gear with no grinding or other signs of distress. Clutch seems okay. But in reverse, I noticed what seemed like a low-pitched mechanical whine coming from the rear end. Maybe that's normal for this tractor, but I wouldn't know. Any advice?

The other question is hydraulics-related. The lift seems strong, but it only actuates when the lever is in the uppermost maybe two inches of the quadrant. Should I be worried?

Otherwise, the machine looked great mechanically. No oil leaks anywhere. In addition to the five-speed, it has a factory hydraulic remote (no leaks there either). Could use some paint, but the tin's all in pretty good shape. The engine was rebuilt five or six years ago and sounds good. Oil pressure and temp are good even when hot. Dunno, but I kinda fancy it. Sure would be a nice upgrade from the N. Just wondering about the concerns I mentioned above. If anybody has any insight, I'd sure be appreciative!

was the lift in draft mode or position mode? if in position mode and only responds in last couple inches, then cam pin and maybee cam worn.

whine in rear? some 'rubber band drive' sound is normal... that R&P normall drives forward most of it's life..

Thanks souNdguy. I did check to make sure the draft control was in position mode, so sounds like the controls are worn. Appreciate the insight!

Wait a sec . . . maybe the position control lever doesn't work like it does on my N -- the lever was pointed straight up; a little pokin' around on this forum leads me to believe it was supposed to point straight down for position control. In which case I don't know what position it was in. Tarnation. [/u]
